  • Tea-party play is a wonderful time to let imagination run free! Inspire your child’s creative play with these activity ideas:
  • Tea party time! Ask the child to create paper invitations and to give them to her friends, family, stuffed animals or dolls. Ask the child to set a table with the saucers, teacups and spoons, and to invite her guests to sit at each place. Encourage the “hostess” to fill each cup with “tea” from the teapot, then to offer milk from the creamer and sugar from the sugar bowl. (Be sure to use only cold liquids such as water, juice or milk for the pretend tea.) Use the saucers to serve tasty treats.
  • Fancy Tea House Grand Opening! Encourage your child to set up a tea service at a very fancy restaurant. Ask her to name the restaurant and perhaps to make a sign for the front door. Offer supplies to make centerpieces, tablecloths and placemats for each table, and ask her to place all her tea supplies on a pretty tray. Encourage your child to choose music to play and pictures to display. When the restaurant opens, ask for a seat and let the “owner” welcome you in her most elegant way!
  • Suggest a “taste-test” guessing game with cups of pretend tea. Ask the child to pour you a cup, then take a sip and act out a strong reaction. Have the child guess what you’ve just tasted-either by describing it (sour, sweet, cold) or naming familiar flavors (chocolate milk, lemonade, orange juice). Offer hints as needed to help the child guess: “It tastes fruity and it’s the color of your shirt!”
  • Ask the child to host a “how-to” show or cooking class all about throwing the perfect tea party. Encourage her to demonstrate how to set the table, pour tea and make guests feel special when they come for tea. Ask plenty of questions to give her opportunities to describe each step, and every point of etiquette!
