  • Ask the child to identify each truck and name the colors on each one.
  • Help the child talk about each truck’s job at the work site. Ask him orher to describe what the dump truck might carry (dirt, rock, construction materials); why the cement mixer’s drum turns; etc.
  • Ask the child to drive a route around the construction zone based on your directions. For instance, you could say, “Start at the gravel pit next to the crane, then follow the road toward the white fence. Drive down the paved road and make the next left turn . . .”
  • Line up the cement mixer, dump truck, and steamroller at the bottom right corner of the rug. Challenge the child to give each vehicle a single push to get it as close as possible to the tires at the upper right without touching them!
  • Move a vehicle around the construction zone from one location to another. Ask the child to watch you and then follow the same route from memory. Take turns being the leader and the follower as youc hange the route around the rug.
  • Encourage the child to tell a story using the rug and trucks. Perhaps the construction crew dug up something surprising at the work site (for example: a dinosaur fossil, buried treasure, or an ancient city). Or the dump truck could get stuck and need a push out from the steamroller!
  • Help the child count all of the traffic cones, barrels, and barricades with orange and white stripes (32). Ask the child to drive the truck that matches them around the construction zone, touching each one along the way!
  • Play a guessing game by giving clues and seeing how quickly the child can determine the answer. For example, you could say, “I am thinking of something green. There are 2 of them. One is full of rocks . . .” (wheelbarrows).

  • Place the vehicles around the construction zone and ask the child to stand in the center of the rug. Challenge the child to keep his or her feet in place while reaching to move the vehicles according to your instructions. For instance, you could say, “Move the steamroller to the crane,” or “Make the cement mixer and the dump truck switch spots.”
